If a few years ago, the word therapy was a synonym of issue; and many people would separate themselves as much as possible from the term, so as to not seem inadequate. Nowadays… things have changed.
Today’s generations have replaced the concept of therapy as treatment and have installed it as a necessary and advisable mental side hustle for anyone who looks to improve their quality of life.
With this new idea of what´s good for us, the standards for cataloguing something as therapeutic have opened up to all sorts of activities and rituals that provide a sense of wellbeing.
The last decade specially, accompanied by a global pandemic, has shifted the perspective towards our intrinsic need as human beings, to connect to the nature around us, in order to regulate our nervous system.
The recent lock downs, and the growing knowledge surrounding the benefits of outdoor life, has many of us convinced, we don´t need more than a few hours in contact with some fresh air, to respond not only to our physical needs, but also the mental hazards of our existence.
A simple, direct and 100% effective solution.
Since the origins of the human species that the urge to explore our territory, get to know it and live it, is one of the axis of our existence. And in this exploration, we have trespassed the material frontiers and expanded our adventure to soaring the skies and submerging ourselves in water.
And thus because of the need of survival or curiosity, or the combination of both it is that we came to navigate rivers. No doubt one of the most hypnotizing and intricate ways of water.
Once we understood that these paths of liquid had currents, and patterns that allowed us to take unexplored routes to unkowns landscapes in an easy, effortless way in concordance with the current… it was that we unleashed the fever of whitewater.
And we soon learned that every river is different, mystical and infinitely entertaining.
But not only that! And here comes the part that really marks us and makes us come back…
It seems simple and complicated to graphic all the reasons why river therapy is special. So, I think I´ll begin by the water itself.
One of the proven reasons, and provable by anyone of us any Sunday afternoon, of why water calms and regulates us, is because of its sensory aspects. The visual and auditory patterns create a base of “white noise” that allows our nervous system to connect with them and isolate our attention effortlessly.
In a world where we are constantly over stimulated, this rest offers and automatic counterattack to stress and anxiety.
Another tremendous effect is at a cerebral level, and therefore also physical and hormonal. Contact with water, and specially moving water, automatically initiates the secretion of dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin (“happy hormones”). While it stabilizes our levels of cortisol. Which elevate in response to stress.
This regulation has a direct effect on our cardiac frequency and blood pressure.
And all of this without a pill or supplement. You just have to be there.
Now… it is true that these attributes apply to any body of water, and that´s why we chase them any time we can, but I must say rivers have a category of their own.
They have been sculpted by nature in the shape of certain appropriate lines to navigate, accompanied by obstacles that are both friends and foes. Presenting itself as an endlessly entertaining challenge, and at the same time completely achievable. This hooks our brain in trying to achieve the reward of fluidity and therefore, graspingly addictive.
These marvelous veins of the planet are in constant movement in a determined direction. So they offer a clear purpose, and also a very real train of emotions as the water is moving. This requires a huge amount of focus. Which, is a tremendous exercise for our brain.
Putting in at point A, navigating kilometers and taking out at point B, prizes is each single paddle with a sense of achievement and mission completed. Similar to the gratification of ending a race. And EVE RY TIME!
The river doesn´t stop, it submits you to a trance of the present, where the next step down river is in many cases, the only way to go. Something that forces us to commit and face our fear and vulnerabilities in a very real way and effective way.
And it´s precisely when confronting this fear that we reach possibly one of the most sublime and palpable releases of our mental limitations. In other words, our mind expands…
The combination of adrenaline and success, or on the other hand, the realization that what we feared isn´t as bad as we previously magnified it in our conscience, allows us to let go of the pre-state of disaster we find ourselves in so many times. When this happens, we relax and are able to connect with a much healthier perspective of everyday challenges.
This means, that every time we go to the river, we improve and augment the tools we need for life in general. And somehow, we are able to reset our minds.
As we tend to say around here… the river is like life itself in so many ways.
Finding then, the exact point where we are able to flow with the moving water, without forcing it, but feeling and understanding it… this is perhaps one of the most exquisite forms of ecstasy, purpose and affinity with nature you can experience.
The mission: sharing this secret that lives in the water, and protecting the gift that it represents.
And the best part? It works EVERY TIME and for EVERYONE. RIVER THERAPY doesn´t leave anybody out.
Have you tried it out? What´s your therapy?
